A Chronology of Holocaust Events

1939

September 1 Nazi Germany attacks Poland, beginning World War II
September-December Polish Jews from areas annexed to Germany expelled    

                       to central Poland
October-November First ghettos established in Poland
   

1940

January Start of "Euthanasia Program" - mental patients gassed in Germany
April 27 Himmler orders creation of Auschwitz concentration camp
November Warsaw ghetto established
   

1941

June 22 Nazi Germany invades the Soviet Union, unleashing mobile killing

                       units
July 31 Göring orders Heydrich to formulate a "comprehensive solution to the

                       Jewish problem."
September 3 First experimental gassings of Soviet POWs at Auschwitz.
September 29-30 Mass murder of Jews at Babi Yar, near Kiev
December 8 Gassing of Jews begins at Chelmno
   

1942

January 20 Wannsee Conference outlines measures to exterminate Jews
March-July Exterminations begin at "Operation Reinhard" camps: Belzec,

                       Sobibor and Treblinka
May 4 Start of mass gassings at Auschwitz
July Start of deportations of Dutch - French Jews to Auschwitz; Warsaw Jews

                       to Treblinka
September Start of mass gassings at Maidanek
December 16 Gypsies ordered sent to Auschwitz
   

1943

March 15 Start of deportations of Greek Jews to Auschwitz
April 19 - May 16 Warsaw ghetto uprising
June Himmler orders liquidation of Polish and Russian ghettos
August 2 Revolt at Treblinka
September 7,500 Danish Jews rescued
October 14 Revolt at Sobibor
October 19 Operation Reinhard declared complete; Belzec, Sobibor,

                      Treblinka and Maidanek cease functioning

     

1944

April 27 Start of deportations of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz
July - December Transports and death marches evacuate Auschwitz
August The last ghetto, Lodz, liquidated
October 7 Revolt by Jewish Sonderkommando at Auschwitz 
November 27 Himmler orders end of gassings
   

1945

January 27 Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz
April 11 Buchenwald is first concentration camp in Germany to be liberated    

                      by the Allies
May 7 Nazi Germany surrenders
