Explore & LearnThe Task outline

As a group of 3-4 you are to research a range of radical groups.

       1. Each member of your group will research one radical
group/individual, using the guidelines provided below.
You should research one of the following (click on your choice to go to the information resources):
       2. You should aim to produce no more than two sides of A4.
       3. For your chosen area you should consider:

a) A brief description of the radical group/individual's key beliefs
(concerning all or some of the following under subheadings:
government, society, economy, religion and/or any other points
    of interest)
b) What happened to them
c) Finally attempt to consider how much of a threat they might have been to the Commonwealth by 1653.

At the end:

  1. You will receive a score for your individual piece and another score for the overall performance of your group (so you will need to help each other to find as much information as possible, and with the presentation of your ideas)
  2. Each student will receive a complete set of the research documents produced by their group (so, again, you will need to help each other to find as much information as possible, and with the presentation of your ideas).
Explore & LearnAssessment

You will receive an assessment grade for your individual research. This will be on the following basis:

Level 1

Level 2
  • Explanation from several sources, textual and web
Level 3
  • Explanation from several sources
  • Good use of examples, contemporary extracts/sources to support your description
Level 4

  • John Milton (1608-1674) Article giving an outline of his life
  • John Milton A brief bio, but then you can listen (30 mins) to the BBC programme of Melvyn Bragg discussing Milton's politics, religious views and poetry with John Carey, (Emeritus Professor of English Literature at Oxford University), Lisa Jardine, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary College, and Blair Worden, Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Sussex.
  • For a massive number of links see The Luminarium - but the music is dire if your speakers are connected!
A new book has come out on Milton (Milton: Poet, Pamphleteer, and Patriot by Anna Beer). These are two review articles that will be useful especially for your final section on his significance:
  • Heavenly muse  Review article of Milton: Poet, Pamphleteer, and Patriot by Anna Beer. From The Economist
  • The Mystery of genius. Andrew Motion, the poet laureate, salutes Anna Beer's reliable guide to Milton
