The Government education bodies in England & Wales, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), produce much that is of value to educators. However it does tend to be produced by ever expanding and name changing government departments and then hidden away in the depths of byzantine, dry, lacklustre official websites. The intention of this page is to make finding what is of value a little easier.

Independent Education News
  • Google news aggregator for UK Education:

  • World Education in the News NewsNow. From the same aggregator, this time with English language news items from across the globe. You can configure the page to just show items from a particular region or country if you wish.

Government Agency News
These are useful news sites from key government agencies (with the exception of NewsNow & Google). Much are made-for-the-press Press releases, but they are an easy way to keep abreast of what is actually happening. They will also send you the releases as emails.
  • DfE News Centre News about schools from the Department for Education. The most recent items are shown below:

2. Official Education & Classroom Research

  • Recent Publications & Search This website contains details of research publications for both (DCSF) and (BIS), as well as those previously published by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) which the two Departments have replaced. The projects are clearly delineated by their titles being prefixed with either ‘DCSF’ or ‘BIS’. See also Research & Statistics Gateway For access to the most current (DCSF) and (BIS) publications and news of upcoming work.
  • Publications The clearest way to browse DCSF & BIS research publications. (Click for quick access):
  • DIUS Research Portal. DIUS (Dept for Innovation & Skills - I did say the departments were byzantine!) is the Higher Education part of BIS. This is their research section. The layout is clear in that it includes the relevant admin reports from the next section that are pertinent to research.
  • Ofsted research Information from Ofsted's research and inspections, including consultations, thematic reports and statistics. See also Ofsted school/LEA Reports ........
  • Teachernet Research From the government created teachernet service for classroom teachers. Use this to review findings and receive interactive email updates about the National Foundation for Educational Research and TeacherNet's current research and topical updates pages to keep abreast of the latest insights and discoveries. The site also includes short digests of recent journal articles, a searchable online database that aims to improve user access to academic research. Access research and evidence based resources for teacher training through the teacher training resource bank referencing over 5500 quality-assured education-related teacher training resources. These materials include reviews of the latest policy documents and published research.
  • See Statistical First Releases as outlined in the next section: many are research items (but hard to find....
